Use your Dream & Invention Box to create the characters
and stage. Then wait until night-time to create a shadow theater!

Just imagine as the lights go down your shadow begins!

Create characters with things you have at home and use a flashlight (a cell phone will do the trick), tell a story and let your characters come to life!

Materials

You can use just body parts (like your arms) and a flashlight, or you can create characters with materials you have at home. For example:

  • Flashlight or cell phone flashlight
  • Paper
  • Pieces of cardboard
  • Paper or plastic plates and cups

Steps

Here’s an example of how to do this activity:

1. Imagine!

What kind of story are we creating tonight? Is it about love? About dinosaurs? About your favorite movie? Where is our story going to come to life?

2. Create!

It’s time to create and let your imagination fly! Turn off the lights, turn on your flashlight and point it to a wall or the ceiling. Place your body or the characters you created in front of the light and watch your story come to life. Tell one or as many stories as you want!

3. Share!

While you play you can record a video of your shadow theater adventures! After the fun, show it to your friends and family to inspire them to create their own story! Share it with them on social media using the hashtags #CreativeLearningAtHome and #PlayingtoConnect

Cool tip

You and your family can start exploring more stories and characters using different parts of the house as the stage of new adventures!

Take a look at what some people have created!
